Anitya – impermanence – often linked to nature and it’s seasons. Explore the impermanence in your own life can you find the beauty even if there is sadness?

Nature reminds me, and reminds me again and again, that nothing stays the same. And I need the reminder often. I resist change. I like the safety of knowing. And of course I thrive on change. Every time I surrender to change it reveals an unexpected relief. One I have felt before but is always disguised under the rigidness of holding on. I strive to preserve the moment all the while knowing that the beauty is really in the letting go. This is my practice; Staying present and not holding on too tight. Letting go, and letting go again. Nature teaches me this, as does my yoga practice. My breath will come and go. Time after time. A seed will sprout, will grow and burst into dazzling bloom, and then it will wither. It knows its time.
Becoming a mother is an intense practice in letting go. I remember vividly my daughter beaming a huge gummy smile – at that age when babies are babbling but don’t yet have teeth – and thinking ‘how could you possibly get any better than this?’ I wanted to hold onto that moment forever. I grieved for that fleeting moment, woeful for the future that would come and take it away from us. But the future came, and it keeps coming, and it’s beyond anything I could’ve imagined. That gummy smile gave way to the most spectacular little girl who, just like the flowers and seasons, is teaching me everyday to surrender and let go – that beauty is in impermanence.
